In 1967, Jean-Guy Lapointe, a milk producer in Embrun (Eastern Ontario), was convinced that improving the profitability of agriculture started with underground drainage. He began searching for a business capable of providing the necessary services for his farm. All potential businesses were located far from his farm and were not overly interested in making the trip to Embrun. So he decided to further his knowledge and took off to the Guelph and Ridgetown Colleges where he spent several weeks taking courses on drainage and soils. In the spring of 1969, he invested $25 000 in a machine which dugs open top trenches and did his own drainage work. He began doing the same work on neighboring farms and Lapointe Drainge was created.
Always the innovator, he was always looking for ways to innovate and improve the efficiency of his equipment. He developed a system to redirect the soil into the trench, immediately after installing a drainage pipe among other innovations.
In 1972, a fire wiped out his herd of 140 milk cows. After much thought, he decided to focus his energy on his new enterprise instead of restarting in the milk industry. He imported new machinery from England to install pipes without digging open-top trenches. It was a new technology and Mr. Lapointe was the first to adopt it in Canada.
Today, Lapointe Limited is one of the drainage leaders in Eastern Ontario. We are members of the Land Improvement Contractors of Ontario, L.I.C.O.
In the early-mid nineties, the children of Mr. Lapointe launched their own venture; Lapointe Developments Inc. A residential developer building new homes and commercial properties. Lapointe Drainage reoriented part of its activities in excavation work to supply the labor required to build these subdivisions. The demand grew to more subdivision to municipal work to working with the Oil and Gas and Rail companies. Today, the company can carry out slope stabilization, erosion works control, dig basements, install mud tanks and manure pits, clear land, remove fences... in short... most that can be done with heavy equipment.
